Celebrating Freedom Photo Competition: Edited

Freedom of Religion: I shot this image using my Canon PowerShot A4000: f/3.2, 1/8. It is a 3 shot HDR that I compiled using Photomatix. I also took the image of the flag with my Canon PowerShot A4000: f/3.0 1/200. I then blended the images together using layer masks. I just wanted to slightly bring out the flag to give it the patriotic feel for the competition. I followed the rule of thirds, with my subject’s face and hands at 1/3 intersections. I also tried to take advantage of the leading lines. I had to adjust some the levels and brightness a little bit. The books on the shelf at one of the 1/3 intersections were too bright and took up too much attention so I had to darken them a bit. I also lightened my subject’s face a little. I used the natural light coming in from the window through the blinds for the lighting.
This competition was to capture the idea of celebrating freedom. I felt that this was a good representation of that, especially since one of the main reasons our country was created was for religious freedom. I am a patriotic person and so I was excited to take part in this competition. It made for a great opportunity to reflect on the real reasons we celebrate the 4th of July.
I submitted my entry on 7/6/12.  Here is a link to the competition.

Large Format Print

bannack truck

The Beater: I sized this image to print at 24×36 inches. I shot this image on 5/24/12 at Bannack Ghost Town at 3:15 pm. I used a Canon T3i Rebel at f/5.6, 1/250. I used aperture priority mode. I made this using a single-shot HDR and then adjusted some of the levels in photoshop and cropped it a bit to better follow the rule of thirds.
I chose this image for my large print because I wanted to do black and white image and I also wanted an image with a smaller focal point since the rest of the image would be so big. I felt it was easier for the eye to focus on something smaller (like the truck) in an a large print. I used the black and white artistic settings in Photomatix when creating this HDR. I then increased the black levels slightly in camera raw and adjusted the levels and brightness in Photoshop. I then cropped the image down slightly, cutting out part of the lower left-hand corner so the truck would be better aligned with the rule of thirds.

Bryce Canyon: This is a picture I took on my way back from Arizona. I took a small detour to visit Bryce Canyon.

I used a quick select tool to highlight the area I wanted to keep and then I masked out the portion I didn’t want and added a slight feather to soften the edges.

Christus: I took this at the Temple Square North visitor center.

Christus: I used the same technique as before, except this time I used my channels options to increase the contrast between colors before I made my selection. I then used a mask to cut out the portions that I didn’t want and to mask my edges. I then added a white background to the image.
